The Río Rubens Conservancy Foundation and School For Field Studies Establish a Collaboration Agreement
Puerto Natales, October 16, 2024
The Río Rubens Conservancy Foundation has signed a collaboration agreement with School For Field Studies (SFS), which will allow for research and educational activities in the sector of Rio Rubens, Magallanes Chile. This alliance seeks to promote knowledge and conservation of local ecosystems, essential for the sustainability of Patagonia

Adjacent Peatlands to the Río Rubens
Exploration of the Río Rubens
During the visit of representatives from SFS, led by Paola Goic, attendees were able to descend by boat along the Río Rubens, exploring its natural beauty and observing the rich biodiversity it harbors. This experience allowed participants to connect directly with the environment and understand the importance of preserving these ecosystems. Present at the visit were Mauricio Kusanovic and Claudio Joots, both serving as members of the Board of Directors of the Río Rubens Conservancy

Importance of Peatlands
Additionally, activities were conducted in the adjacent peatlands, ecosystems that play a crucial role in water regulation and carbon sequestration. Peatlands are vital for water conservation and climate change mitigation, as they store large amounts of carbon and help maintain water quality.
The sector of the Río Rubens is particularly interesting because its source comes from an extensive peatland system, making it a unique river. Throughout its entire basin, peatlands not only serve as essential elements of the ecosystem but also represent a fascinating field of study for researchers and a valuable educational opportunity for students who will learn about these critical systems.

About The School for Field Studies (SFS)
SFS is a nonprofit organization that offers study abroad programs focused on environmental research and hands-on education. With centers in various countries, SFS allows students to participate in field research and collaborate with local communities to address environmental issues. Its interdisciplinary approach combines natural and social sciences, preparing students to face global environmental challenges.
Objectives of Río Rubens Conservancy
The agreement establishes that SFS will have access to Estancia Cerro Negro to conduct scientific research, contributing to the objectives of the future Río Rubens Conservancy Foundation. These objectives include the conservation and protection of Patagonia's ecosystems, the promotion of knowledge about the natural dynamics of the area, and the pursuit of actions that foster sustainability and biodiversity.
Future Educational Activities
Looking ahead, SFS has scheduled a visit with its students for November 7, 2024, associated with a class on wetlands and peat. This activity represents a valuable opportunity to educate students about the importance of local ecosystems and foster a commitment to environmental conservation.
Commitment to Conservation
The Río Rubens Conservancy Foundation and SFS are committed to working together to create a positive impact in the region and the community, contributing to the understanding and protection of one of the most emblematic rivers in Patagonia.
